Who didn't want to be Neo in The Matrix? He spent his nights hacking computers, demonstrating his computer smarts to  the world. These days there are a lot of wanna-be Neos out there, hacking illegally and becoming a thorn in the side of society. But there are also legal hackers who help businesses keep trouble away. These people make Internet security their job, and they're able to do it because of Internet security certifications.

Lately, Internet Security Certifications are gaining popularity inside the broad range of information technology certifications. In recent years, the web has become increasingly dangerous, with more advanced hackers breaching many computer network security systems. As a result, more companies are hiring people with computer security knowledge and Internet security certifications.

There are many different types of Internet security certifications ranging from legal hackers to Internet auditors. The broad range of Internet security certifications corresponds with the numerous kinds of problems that occur on the Internet. Depending on the job, there are Internet security certifications for it. The most popular certifications are:

• GIAC (Global Information Assurance Certifications): The first security certification offers programs including firewall analyst, intrusion analyst, incident handler, and many others. Each separate program requires a passing grade on a $450 exam.

• CISA (Certified Information Systems Auditor): A certification to become an Internet auditor. A passing grade on an annual exam given in July is required. The price of the test can range between $300-$505 depending on membership.

• CEH (Certified Ethical Hacker): This is one of the most closely guarded Internet security certifications, because of the dangerous knowledge that is attained. A minimum of two years in Internet security required. Courses and a final exam are also required.

Along with the general Internet security certifications there are certifications that relate to a specific business or platform. Larger businesses usually need more security than smaller businesses. The three most common businesses are Microsoft, Novell, and Crisco.

Microsoft Internet security certifications are for people dealing with security issues on a Windows 2000 platform or Microsoft software. The most popular certification is the Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE). To obtain this certification a passing grade on a total of 7 exams at $125 each is required. Other popular Microsoft certifications include Microsoft Certified Systems Developer (MCSD), Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA), and Microsoft Certified Application Developer (MCAD).

Novell Internet security certifications are for people working with Novell intranet security issues, usually on Windows software. The most basic certification is the Certified Novell Administrator (CNA). Once this is earned, a person can move up the Novell ranks. Other popular Novell it certifications are: Certified Novell Engineer (CNE), Novell Academic Instructor (NAI), and Certified Novell Instructor (CNI).

Cisco Internet security certifications are for people who are dealing network instillation security issues via LAN or WAN lines. Popular Cisco certifications are: Cisco Certified Design Associate (CCDA), Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), and Cisco IP Contact Center Express Specialist (CPCC).

There are Internet security certifications that correspond to a number of different expertise. Hacking, auditing, and networking are all a part of the big wide world of Internet security. If it's something that seems appealing, do the research, take the courses, pass the tests, and go protect a business or two.
