Today, most Americans have at least one personal computer in their home, some even more. Computers are in every office, school, store, library practically around the world. Computer technology will only get bigger over time making information technology professionals in very high demand.

Information technology (IT) professionals design, develop, support, and manage computer software, hardware, and networks.

Because it is progressing everyday it is important to remain up to date with the latest technology. A four year degree may not cover the most current information which is why many computer certifications were put together by top companies, such as Microsoft and Comp TLA for example. Passing the exams for a specific company shows you’re as up to date with the most current information as you can be. Although a four year degree will give you a nice overview of computer knowledge, it might no longer be required to get a good job in computer technology.

These days companies are looking for people who have computer certifications. These certifications are geared to teach specific computer skills. Companies look at a certification like a degree; if not more because it has repeatedly shown that a staff of certified computer professionals has benefits in the company productivity. To the boss, this means more money.

There are many different specialized areas in computer technology you can get certified in: systems administration, systems engineering, and training just to name a few. All computer certifications should be available as online classes. Working on a computer at home teaches you valuable skills. This also helps you decide what type of computer certification would best suit you.

A+ Certification is a general certification. It is appropriate for those at entry-level as well as those who just want to learn more about computers. This computer certification is a wonderful foundation to have. It allows you to move on to a more specific certification. A+ teaches installs, configuration, upgrading, troubleshooting, and general repairs.

Microsoft offers a whole range of certifications which are geared to fit the current programs and computers. They will prepare you for a career with Microsoft products. Microsoft has been around since 1975 and has always been at the top of the list for innovation and using the technology of tomorrow today. Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) candidates are required to first pass the current Microsoft certification exam. This provides a good measurement of your technical skills and where your expertise lie. The exams for your chosen certification will test the preparation you put in and showcase your new skills.

CompTLA is known as the world's largest developer of IT certification exams. Their computer certification program has been around since 1993 and more than 900,000 CompTIA certifications have been earned worldwide. They offer certifications in PC hardware, networking, servers, Internet, project management, training, security, and home technology to name a few. Their standards are said to provide a reliable predictor of employee success.

Adobe has changed the face of computers in many ways with their award-winning technologies and software. Adobe offers computer certification as an expert (ACE), professional (ACP), and instructor (ACI). Getting an ACE will help you get a raise, a job, and will definitely help to promote yourself as an IT. An ACP will put you on a higher level then other IT's. This computer certification shows your value to employees and colleagues. An ACI will allow you to teach others, such as your staff/center which can only benefit your company.

A good computer certification should prepare you for the future of your career. The emphasis should be on understanding rather than memorizing the material. In today’s world there is a high demand for information technology professionals and it shows no sign of slowing down.
